Listen Up: The Bones Mix Tape, Volume 5

Ever since “Ho Hey” found its way to the Jeffersonian, The Lumineers have been Bones to me. I can’t get enough of either one of them–which is great, because so many of The Lumineers’ songs would feel right at home on B&B’s mix tape.

“Classy Girls”

She spoke of places I had never been
That she had traveled to
And we slow danced along to faster tunes

And I made her laugh, I made a pass,
I showed her my half dollar ring
She said, “That’s pretty cool,
But classy girls don’t kiss in bars, you fool”

(No they don’t)

So later on the crowd calmed down
And I believe it was as if something drew me closer to her lips

So picture my surprise when I had tried to lean in for a kiss
And she just smiled and turned her head down

I asked her, “Why?” and she replied
It was nothing I was doing wrong, it’s just what it is.
No, classy girls don’t kiss in bars like this

HUNDREDTH EPISODE FLASHBACK, am I right?! Brennan talks about her studies in India. Booth makes her laugh. Ok, fine, B&B do kiss in front of the bar that night. But Brennan won’t let him get in that cab with her, because she’s not ready for anything serious tequila. Right then, outside that bar, it isn’t the time or the place for them. They’re too classy for a casual hookup.

“Stubborn Love”

It’s better to feel pain, than nothing at all
The opposite of love’s indifference
So pay attention now, I’m standing on your porch screaming out
And I won’t leave until you come downstairs

So keep your head up, keep your love
Keep your head up, my love
Keep your head up, keep your love

I don’t blame you dear for running like you did, all these years
I would do the same, you best believe
The highway signs say we’re close, but I don’t read those things anymore
I never trusted my own eyes

When we were young, oh oh we did enough
When it got cold, ooh ooh we bundled up
I can’t be told, ah ah it can’t be done

“Stubborn Love” is season six—the year Brennan learns to fight for Booth. It’s painful, but “that’s so much better than dead, or even dead inside.” Brennan screams out her love for him in that car (metaphorically, I mean; there’s no actual screaming. Brennan’s a classy girl, remember?) and stays by his side until he sorts out his issues. B&B do their fair share of running from each other, but the cards say it all works out in the end.

“Dead Sea”

I headed west, I was a man on the move
New York had lied to me, I needed the truth
Oh, I need somebody, needed someone I could trust
I don’t gamble, but if I did I would bet on us

Like the Dead Sea
You told me I was like the Dead Sea
You’ll never sink when you are with me
Oh, Lord, like the Dead Sea

You told me you were good at running away
Domestic life, it never suited you like a suitcase
You left with just the clothes on your back
You took the rest when you took the map

Yes, there are times we live for somebody else

I’ve been down, I’ve been defeated
You’re the message I was heeding
Would you stay,
Would you stay the night?

I DON’T GAMBLE, BUT IF I DID, I WOULD BET ON US.

The Lumineers are Booth. This song is Booth. He’s the gambler. He’s never gonna let her fall; he’s always there. He lives for Brennan (to the point that his will is a sticky note reading, “Everything goes to Bones”), and she’s good at running away, but he teaches her to share her life. And when he asks her to stay the night…

taking his arm

 “Ho Hey”

I’ve been trying to do it right
I’ve been living a lonely life
I’ve been sleepin’ here instead
I’ve been sleepin’ in my bed
Sleepin’ in my bed

 So show me family
All the blood that I will bleed
I don’t know where I belong
I don’t know where I went wrong
But I can write a song

I belong with you, you belong with me
You’re my sweetheart
I belong with you, you belong with me
You’re my sweetheart

Love we need it now
Let’s hope for some
Cause oh, we’re bleedin’ out

I belong with you, you belong with me
You’re my sweetheart

Booth tries to do it right when Brennan goes on the run, but he’s lonely, so he decides to bleed it out now and get his family back. Because Brennan’s his sweetheart, they belong together, and if you think otherwise, why on earth are you watching? THE WORLD NEEDS THEM.

So there you have it: B&B’s foray into foot-stomping fiddle territory. What other Lumineers songs or lines do you think would fit them? Leave your suggestions below, and enjoy the tunes!
