Times Mulder and Scully Should Have Made Out This Week, Volume 11

“Spacelings,” so hot right now.

Times Mulder and Scully should have made out in this week’s batch of episodes:

“The Beginning”

  • Let’s consider the fact that Scully was so focused on getting Mulder’s lips on her lips that she totally missed the aliens.

xfiles beginning polo shirt

  • “Why do I bother?”
  • “Okay, forgive the scientific argument just for a second.” Only for you, Mulder. ONLY FOR YOU would Scully ever say that.
  • “You told me that my science kept you honest, that it made you question your assumptions, that by it, I’d made you a whole person. If I change now, it wouldn’t be right. Or honest.” What Mulder said to Scully in that hallway meant so much to her that she still remembers it almost word for word. She knows that he needs her to test all of his theories, even when he doesn’t want her to, so she takes his hand to remind him that she still does it all for him, light cream cheese included. She’s his scientific other half. The most important promise Scully can make to Mulder is the promise to always stand just a little bit opposite him.

“Listen, Mulder.”

x files listen mulder

Can’t listen. Sorry. Your hands are soft. Already blacked out.

  • Diana gets the Scully face.

  • Scully wants a link between Gibson and the virus so badly—for Mulder, but also for them, so they can get back to being Mr. and Mrs. Spooky ASAP.
  • She dutifully shuts the door when he jokes that she should and I don’t know why that means so much to me but this show has already ruined me emotionally so sure, let’s all get worked up about Scully closing a door.
  • “Everything we were told, Mulder.” It was just Mulder in that basement for a long time. Everything happened to him or happened because of him or was taken from him. He’s used to accepting all of the responsibility, but also getting all of the focus. Scully is really into reframing his ‘me’ into an ‘us.’ She lets him know that he’s not alone, and she makes sure that she’s counted.
  • Scully won’t stand for anyone who would protect themselves before protecting Mulder.
  • “I don’t doubt what you saw, Mulder. I don’t doubt you. I’m willing to believe, but not in a lie, and not in the opposite of what I can prove. It comes down to a matter of trust. I guess it always has.” I think this has been true for Scully since day one—she’s always listened to him—but it’s still a big deal for her to actually say that she’s willing to believe. (Though never willing to abandon SCIENCE.) This is what she meant when she grabbed Mulder’s hand; she was telling him to trust that even when her data doesn’t support him, she does.
  • Say “spacelings” again.

xfiles beginning hearing

  • “Come on, Scully. Just one quick side trip.”

Puppy needs a walk, Scully.

  • Scully’s cool with suffering the FBI’s humiliation in silence if it helps them earn back the X-files, but she can’t turn down helping people. The minute Mulder says that he thinks Crump was trying to warn the cops, she’s in, because he’s right. Something is up, and they can help.
  • I like that Scully and Mulder have this need to work every case together, but as long as they’re both on the same case, they’re perfectly comfortable splitting up and doing their own thing. They’re even excited by it. He’s off to talk to Crump. She’s off to look at the body. They’re good investigators, and they know it.

  • “You know how to pick ’em.”
  • “I’m composing a sonnet; what does it look like I’m doing?” He needs a retort and the closest thing to the front of his mind is a sonnet. Mulder, have you been thinking about how to tell Scully that you love her?
  • Scully tells Kirsch that she and Mulder both felt this situation deserved their immediate attention. Here she is again making everything ‘We’ and sharing responsibility.
  • He scrawls a note to her before he leaves the car and I feel like it’s the equivalent of pinning “If lost, please return to Dana Scully” onto the back of his shirt.
  • “Take him at his word. Let him through.” Scully trusts Mulder’s judgment all the way, and she makes everyone else trust it too.
  • Mulder says he has cell phone withdrawal. The only person he talks to is Scully. I think the cell phone MIGHT not be what he’s really missing.
  • “Well lay it on me!” (OKAY.)
  • Kirsch tells Scully that she apologizes for Mulder a lot, but she doesn’t. She fights for him a lot. She would never apologize for him, or for the lives they’ve saved.

  • Good news: Every version of Scully is wonderful. “How’d you like to see the stars and the American flag?”
Good news: Every version of Scully is wonderful.

Mulder, the fact that you’re wearing a hat is not the issue here, but carry on being precious anyway.

  • When Scully asks Skinner to help her get Mulder back, she keeps insisting that it’s not for her. It’s for Mulder. Remember when Gibson said that people only cared about him because they needed something from him? Scully doesn’t need anything from Mulder but Mulder. What’s good for him is good for her, just because it’s good for him. No other reason. She’d go further to save him than she’d go to save herself, and she demands that others follow her.
  • Not getting out of this that easily.
Let's all just be adults and admit that this is deeply hot.

Let’s all be adults and admit that this is extremely hot.

  • No time for the basic people.
I've played this scene in my head for the past week while walking to work.

My commute has been a lot more bearable since I started playing this scene in my head while I speed walk past tourists.

  • “I want you to do me a favor. It’s not negotiable.”

xfiles scully favor do it kill you triangle

  • Long live the queen.
I'm into it and not sorry. Mulder can come too. Also we should talk about how Scully has feelings for saving Mulder's life that can only be expressed through the majesty of kisses.

I’m into it and not sorry. Mulder can come too. Also we should talk about how Scully thinks about finding Mulder alive and just has to kiss someone.

  • She knows exactly how good she is.

xfiles triangle scully got it

  • Mulder has chemistry with Scully even when she’s never met him before.
  • Past Scully instinctively defends him.
Her ScullyFace is still strong.

Her Scully face is still strong.

  • Mulder naturally rests his hand on her shoulder and then realizes what he’s done. He’s got this way of moving with her, and he can’t help but fall into it.

xfiles triangle mulder scully shoulder

  • I love that they’re crawling around on the floor when he reaches out to her. I love that she trusts him enough to take his hand and follow.

xfiles triangle mulder scully hands running

  • “So in case we never meet again…”
Absolutely no fruit basket for you this time, lighting department.

Lighting department, WHY

  • “You did something incredibly stupid.”
  • “You saved the world, Scully!” “Yeah, you’re right. I did.” She saved Mulder, which is the same thing.
  • The way he taps her hip gives me life.
  • xfiles triangle mulder never seen you again“In your dreams.” People only say that when the sexual tension is almost unbearable.
  • Her voice is SO INTIMATE right now. She’s glad to have him back, and she doesn’t think he’ll remember the conversation anyway, so she lets herself be sweet with him. “Mulder, I want you to close your eyes, and I want you to think to yourself, ‘There’s no place like home.'”
  • “Hey, Scully?”
I love how close she gets to him. This is very much how she was in the hotel room in "Detour"--being cute in a showy way, just because she likes having fun with him.

I love how close she gets to him. She wants him to see how cute she’s being.

He hesitates for just a second, but once he goes for it, he's all matter of fact.

He hesitates for just a second, but once he goes for it, he’s all matter of fact.

He means it, Scully! HE MEANS IT.

He means it, Scully! HE MEANS IT. Look at the way his face drops when she doesn’t respond how he hoped.

  • This is IMPORTANT. Mulder loves Scully. She wants him to, which is why she won’t even engage with him right now. She’s been waiting for an “I love you,” and the first one she gets is a hospital bedside confession at the tail end of a Wizard of Oz story. But of course it is. Could it be anything else between these two? He just went on an adventure with her—but not really her—and he knows that they fit together so well that different versions of Scully and Mulder are saving the world in every era. But THIS Scully is his, and her red hair is inches away from his face, and how could he not tell her how he feels? He knows that he loves her. How long has he known? Was it the cancer? The speech about his Apollo 11 keychain? Their first case, that night in the graveyard when she laughed in the rain because they were actually investigating something she couldn’t explain, and she was excited by it? It doesn’t really matter right now. Mulder loves Scully.
And he really did kiss her.

And he really did kiss her.

  • “I’m all a-tingle.”
  • “Mulder, it’s the dim hope of finding that proof that’s kept us in this car, or one very much like it, for more nights than I care to remember, driving hundreds if not thousands of miles through neighborhoods and cities and towns where people are raising families and buying homes and playing with their kids and their dogs, and, in short, living their lives. While we – we – we just keeeeep driving.” Mulder. Scully wants to settle down with you. Get out of the car. SELL THE CAR.
  • “This IS a normal life.” Chasing the truth with Scully is the most normal thing he can imagine. It’s all he needs.
  • He can’t even look away from her without holding on to be sure that he doesn’t lose her.

  • MULDER: (follows authority) SCULLY: what

x files scully dreamland

  • “‘I’d give you his name if I had it’? Whatever happened to protecting our contacts, protecting the work?” Mulder respects people who take risks to do the right thing, and Scully appreciates that about him.
  • “Mulder you are ACTING BIZARRE!”

"Mulder you are acting BIZARRE!"

  • Mulder doesn’t flirt with other women. But Mulder especially does not objectify Scully.

x files dreamland scully shock

  • “Morning…Terry.”
  • Someday Mulder and Scully will be late to a meeting with someone important because he spent the whole morning doing this while she was trying to get ready.

x files dreamland mulder mirror

  • “Look, little lady, I think it’s time you got your panties on straight.”

  • “………Am I out of MY mind?”
  • If Mulder won’t find their source, then she’ll do it on her own. It’s what they do.
  • “That, and you mumble something about Scully in your sleep.” After dreaming about whatever sex scene he fell asleep to.
  • I’d seen this gif and assumed that it was Morris in Mulder’s body. I have never been happier to be wrong.

xfiles dreamland mulder face

  • His Scully came to find him!

  • Touching Scully’s back and guiding her while they talk is such a Mulder thing.

xfiles dreamland i'm really mulder

  • “Your brother’s name is Bill Jr. He’s in the Navy and he hates me.” This is the first thing to get a reaction out of her.
He does hate you...

He does hate you…

  • “Lately for lunch you’ve been having this little 6 oz. cup of yogurt, plain yogurt, into which you stir some bee pollen because you’re on some kind of bee pollen kick, even though I tell you you’re a scientist and you should know better.” He watches Scully eat her adorable, exasperating lunch every day, and then he scolds her for it. #married
  • “Even that yogurt thing?”

xfiles dreamland so you so scully

  • “Would I do this? Would I do this, Scully?”
He wouldn't.

Mulder would never.

“Dreamland II”

  • “I’ve been telling you for years you should play more by the book, haven’t I?” She’s figuring it out. Mulder can’t play by the book any more than she can give up science.
  • Mulder offers her a home-cooked meal, and that’s when she knows. She’s seen his fridge.
The game is up.

The game is up.

  • “This guy hasn’t been laid in ten years.” He’s been a bit busy catching aliens with Special Agent Dana Scully.
  • “Special TRAMP Dana Scully!”

xfiles mulder waterbed

  • “No, I don’t hate it.” (I just hate you.)
  • We actually don’t deserve her.
"Or I just shoot you, BABY."

“Or I just shoot you, BABY.”

  • I love how tentatively she asks Mulder if it’s really him, and how sweetly he asks what she’s doing here. “I’m trying to figure out a way to help you.”
  • It was a brilliant move to keep David as Mulder, even when everyone else sees him as Morris, because it hurts so much more to see him nod his little Mulder nod as Scully peers into his face and ask again if it really is him in there. It’s that much more unfair to see him standing there, processing the news that he’s going to be stuck like this. Scully is BROKEN by the fact that there’s no way to switch him back, so Mulder takes the focus off of him and encourages her to fight for her job. He knows she can do it, and that’s one of the things she loves about him.
So, in case you needed confirmation, Scully is into Mulder's face.

So, in case you needed confirmation, Scully is into Mulder’s face.

For just a second, he forgets that they're saying goodbye and enjoys the fact that she wants to kiss him.

For just a second, he forgets that they’re saying goodbye and is just happy that she wants to kiss him.

  • “If I shoot him, is that murder or suicide?” “Neither, if I do it first.” JOKES! But also pain.
  • There’s no way to say goodbye to him. There’s no POSSIBLE way she can find words to sum up what they are to each other.
NOPE nope nope nope nope

  • It’s normal for a handful of sunflower seeds to be emotionally destructive, right?
This is the legacy he leaves her with: the man who didn't settle down and didn't get out of the car. He just kept driving with his sunflower seeds in the cupholder.

This is how he wants her to remember him: as the man who thought driving with her, sunflower seeds in the cupholder, was the most normal life of all.

  • Just like old times.

  • “I know it’s not your normal life, but thanks for coming out there with me.”

“How the Ghosts Stole Christmas”

  • Scully can protest all she likes, but she’s so excited to get in that car with Mulder on Christmas Eve and listen to his story. He loves telling it for her. He probably practiced it while he was waiting.
  • “They’ve come back?” “That’s the stooory.”

xfiles scully mulder story christmas

  • He was a brooding but heroic young man, beloved of Lyda, a sublime beauty with a light that seemed to follow her wherever she went. They were likened to two angels descended from heaven whom the gods could not protect from the horrors being visited upon this cold grey earth.” Well then. Do these legendary star-crossed lovers sound like anyone we know?
  • “Driven by a tragic fear of separation.” Yep.
  • Scully announces to herself that her New Year’s resolution is to not follow Mulder into every creepy house out there. You only make New Year’s resolutions to give up things you like doing.
Even when the party in question is a huge dork.

Even when the party in question is a huge dork.

  • “I mean, Mulder, it doesn’t take an advanced degree in psychology to understand the unconscious yearnings that these imaginings satisfy. You know, the longing for immortality the hope that there is something beyond this mortal coil, that we might never be long without our loved ones. I mean, these are powerful, powerful desires. I mean, they’re the very essence of what make us human. The very essence of Christmas, actually.” I don’t think for a second that Scully’s only joy in life is to prove Mulder wrong, but I do think she takes great joy in telling him that she’s right, eloquently and at great length, and then proceeding as if he’s right too, even when their theories are completely contradictory.
  • “Tell me you’re not afraid.” “All right. I’m afraid. But it’s an irrational fear.”

xfiles scully mulder ghosts afraid

  • “I got your back.” “Thank you.”
  • “Mulder, she’s wearing my outfit.”

  • “Maybe you two should’ve discussed your real feelings before you came out here.” Even GHOSTS ship it.
He SIGHS first though.

He SIGHS first though.

  • Mulder knows that Scully’s not going to shoot him, he’s not going to shoot her, and if she ever tried to shoot herself, he wouldn’t let her. He’s been mostly playing along with Lyda until this point, but he’s serious about that.
  • Even when Scully realizes that Mulder did take her keys, she still doesn’t believe that he’d shoot her either.
  •  Mulder falls back on that trust they have in each other when they’re crawling across the floor yelling “YOU SHOT ME FIRST.” Neither one of them would ever do this, and he knows it.
xfiles mulder scully not shot ghosts christmas

And now it’s an adventure again.

  • It’s so much more romantic somehow that they both run back to their respective cars. They trust each other to go do their independent thing and then come back together, just as they do when they’re investigating.
  • The ghosts tried to convince them that they were alone in the world, that Mulder is “afraid of loneliness” and that Scully has a “subconscious desire to find fulfillment through another.” They were right about that, but what they didn’t count on is that Scully and Mulder are alone together. Their partnership keeps him from being self-righteous and narcissistic, and it keeps her from being the kind of person who exists to prove him wrong. While that criticism does get to them a bit, as soon as they’re back together, they know they’re okay. “Maybe I did want to be out there with you.”
xfiles mulder scully ghosts did want to be out there

  • They just have to do little things for each other. Of course he got her a gift, even when they said that they wouldn’t. Of course she got him one too. They’re FAMILY. And they’re so happy about it.

Bring on the rest of season six! And maybe a new lighting department.

  1. Oh, man. This is why season 6 brought me such unabashed joy. THOSE FACES. At all times!

“Dreamland” got a lot of flack back in the day, but you hit the nail on the head about why I personally loved that set of episodes.

And “How the Ghosts Stole Christmas” is just bloody brilliant any way you look at it.

    1. They’re in prime FACE mode right now, and it’s great.

“Dreamland” caught some flack? Interesting. Was it because Morris is a creep? Because he definitely is. But the end is SO strong

And I LOVED “How the Ghosts Stole Christmas” (thank goodness, too–I would have been devastated if an episode with Ed Asner and Lily Tomlin were anything less than wonderful. But of course, how could it be?) “Triangle” was also a blast. Basically everything.

  2. Ahhh!!!! My week feels complete now! I have no idea what I am going to do once you are finished watching all of the episodes and the last movie. I so look forward to your posts because they make me smile and laugh as you put in writing all my thoughts of the Mulder-Scully relationship. Twenty one years and counting, these two have ruined me and I see that changing NEVER. They are perfect…just perfect.

“It’s normal for a handful of sunflower seeds to be emotionally destructive, right?” Of course! But, then again, everything these two do is emotionally destructive to me!

  3. Some people thought the non-conspiracy eps of S6 were too wacky, but I love the whole season unabashedly. FLOVE.

Anyone who saw “Drive” was not surprised by how good Bryan Cranston was in Breaking Bad. Because he’s SO GOOD in this episode.

I could write an entire book about “Triangle.”

“How The Ghosts Stole Christmas” just happened to be the first ep I ever saw. I subscribe to EW, so I knew there was a will-they-or-won’t-they thing going on, but I’d never seen the show. And from this one episode, I fell completely in love with the two of them. Later that same night, I saw “3” in a syndicated rerun, and just the bit at the end with Mulder caressing Scully’s cross was enough to make me ‘plode. And that was it – I was off to the races. I proceeded to purchase all the episodes which were then available on VHS (not nearly enough of them), and I recorded the rest (sloooooowly) from the reruns that were then airing on FX and from the weekend syndication airings. I kept a freaking spreadsheet to track which ones I’d managed to record and which ones I’d watched. And of course I watched the second half of S6 as it aired. By the time S7 began, I was all caught up and hooked forever. LOL.

I love how your “Terms of Endearment” section is, uh, short. That’s… appropriate. Although I do love the Garbage song.

P.S. One week until “Streetcar” at the movies! I am excite.

    1. Oh I’m soooo into this season so far. I think it’s great that they’re having some fun.

      B.Cranst kills it in “Drive.”

I HAD SO MANY FEELINGS ABOUT “TRIANGLE” and the friends who watched with me could vouch for the fact that I was not composed at ALL. It’s so FUN. And Scully is everything.

I love that story! “How the Ghosts Stole Christmas” would be such a good one to start with–and I love that you made a spreadsheet. So perfect.

      Ahaahahahaahah garbage song, yes.

  4. I remember that Season 6 in general got a lot of flack when it originally aired for being too lighthearted and not having enough “scary” episodes, but it’s one of my all-time favorite seasons and has some of the best “comfort food” episodes of the show that I just find myself coming back to repeatedly when I just need a random episode to watch. And watching “How the Ghosts Stole Christmas” on Christmas Eve has become a tradition every year since the episode first aired.

“It’s normal for a handful of sunflower seeds to be emotionally destructive, right?”

    *blubbering mess* Every. Time.

Also counting down the days until Streetcar. Can’t wait!

    1. I totally agree! I can tell that a lot of these will be comfort episodes for me. And I’m SO EXCITED to go home for Christmas and force everyone to join me in my new tradition of watching that episode.

Yep. I need Gillian’s yellow dress now.

  5. “Mulder loves Scully. She wants him to, which is why she won’t even engage with him right now. She’s been waiting for an “I love you,” and the first one she gets is a hospital bedside confession at the tail end of a Wizard of Oz story. But of course it is. Their first case, that night in the graveyard when she laughed in the rain because they were actually investigating something she couldn’t explain, and she was excited by it? It doesn’t really matter right now. Mulder loves Scully.”

I love this post and I swear it’s not the drugs talking. –S

    1. Thanks! And THANK YOU FOR LOVING THIS SHOW. What did I do without it??

Fun fact: My dad proposed to my mom when he was laid up after a back injury, and now when they’re annoying each other he blames the drugs. Scully missed out on a real opportunity here.

I just read the full Head Over Feels top 15 and got very emotional. Loved it. Will formulate more coherent thoughts later.

  6. Oh man, you blog about ‘The X-Files’? I am totally coming here from now on.

I love Season 6 and I dont care who knows it.

‘Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas’ is my all time favorite Christmas song for reasons.

Wait until you get to “The Unnatural’

    1. Oh I’m LOVING season 6. No shame whatsoever 🙂 And I hear you on “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”–it’s always been a favorite, but somehow it’s even more of a favorite now. For REASONS.
Ahaha thanks! Come ANYTIME. I can’t stop talking about Mulder and Scully.

  7. Season 6 is definitely one of my favorites. I mean, let’s be honest, they get cuter and cuter as time goes on. Dreamland I and II are those episodes that I rewatch all the time, because of reasons. How the Ghosts Stole Christmas gets rewatched every single Christmas too 😉

I can’t stop talking about Mulder and Scully either, this problem doesn’t go away any time soon!

Thanks for another great recap, I look forward to this blog every single week and I’m going to be sad when you finish the series!

    1. They do get cuter! I love it. And I’m so excited to add that episode to my annual Christmas rotation.

Thanks!! I’m not sure what I’ll do when I’m done, either. Weep, for sure. Rewatch immediately, probably. The usual coping mechanisms 🙂

      1. Rewatch immediately. It’s a never-ending pattern, I’m always in some state of rewatch with XF 🙂

  8. I just love taking this trip through The X-Files with you. It’s bringing why I first absolutely loved the show all back to me. Side note–I’ve shown my SciFi club Pusher, Tes Dos Bichos, and Fire. I had three or four kids who had never seen it. They are all shippers now. Just three eps! Amazing!.

  9. Please for give my gutter-brain, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that the last time I watched “How the Ghosts Stole Christmas” I noticed that his give to her is very…*phallic shaped*…and she gave him a *box.*

    Well played, writers. Well played.

  10. Finally getting around to reading the rest of your posts! I wanted to finish re-watching my DVDs, and I’m up through Season 7 right now, and so now I can continue on with your excellent blog posts. : )

I have an intense love/hate relationship with Season 6. The mytharc went to hell, but most of the MoTW episodes are great and warm my shipper heart. But mostly my love/hate stems from whatever was going on with Mulder and Scully lol. I mean, there were times where I was like, “what is wrong here when the people annoying me the most in this episode are Mulder and Scully?” Haha. There were times when I hated Mulder with the fire of a thousand burning suns, only to fall completely in love with him again when “The Unnatural” aired, and then that love burned bright until the Season 6 finale where I hated him again. But then I loved him with a passion through Season 7. Then Season 8 happened, but I’m blaming Season 8 Mulder on 1013 Productions lol.

  11. You forgot Dreamland II’s best Mulder line: “Hey, Grandma Topgun, will you shut the hell up!?”

Also did you notice when Scully went to Mulder’s apartment and Morris took off her coat how stiff she became? She knew he wasn’t Mulder and she stiffened up, because she doesn’t like Not!Mulder touching her. She does the same thing when he puts his hands on her shoulders and leads her to the bedroom.

Also… *Mulder and Morris creeper peek over the bathroom stall* hey

  12. “This is how he wants her to remember him: as the man who thought driving with her, sunflower seeds in the cupholder, was the most normal life of all.”
What the…oh my god, are you trying to straight up murder me?? Like I needed that incredibly astute, heart-breaking, spot on insight!

  13. Triangle – adored it. The split screens, the connection that follows M&S through different timelines and alternate realities, Mulder’s face when he touches his cheek at the end AND IT’S BRUISED! And on actual declaration of love! I had actually totally forgotten about the Skinner kiss. Of course, they let us actually SEE that one!

Dreamland I/II. Very cleverly done. Waterbed scene was funny, with the two of them looking up in the mirror. And it was so sad when Scully thought she would never get *her* Mulder back.

I have always wondered what the presents were in How the Ghosts Stole Christmas. That generated a lot of discussion back in the day. Of course back in the day discussion was held on a newsgroup. Things have changed a lot.

    1. Triangle is one of my absolute favorites. It’s just fun. It’s such a pure release of joy after so many intense episodes. And that Skinner kiss!

The end of Dreamland II really does make it for me—their almost-goodbye is so raw. There’s so much they’re not saying. But isn’t there always?

And the presents! I want to know, but I also love speculating.

  14. I know I’m two years late to the party, but I just want you to know that these How Many Times They Should Have Made Out recaps are giving me life. I haven’t tried to watch the series since it originally aired and I was a boy-crazy paranormally obsessed thirteen year old. Now it’s 20 years later and I’m getting over a really bad breakup while at the same time finally working through divorce proceedings and I put this show back on as a distraction and I am here to tell you it’s exactly what I needed. And you crushed it with these recaps! They give me so much to laugh about. Like I KNEW at the end of Triangle that he was about to say “I Love You” and when he actually did I EXPLODED, because I don’t remember even 5% of this shit from the first time I watched it. It’s all new again! Anyway, thank you for being so funny and so on point, because it’s much needed.

  15. Re: Just a random observation- in the beginning of Dreamland II, there is a screenshot of Mulders FBI personnel file. He is marked “single” not “married” or “divorced”. So for me this definitely rules out Mulder being married to Diana or anyone else. We can all ignore that wedding ring seen in a few early episodes.

  16. Very late with this comment, but I love the contrast between the kiss in “Triangle” and the actual kiss that happens in “Millennium.” Mulder has to know that whatever’s going on in “Triangle” is not quite reality; it’s a real experience, but it’s also sort of like a lucid dream. So in Mulder’s fantasy world, he just grabs Scully and kisses the hell out of her like he’s the hero of a thirties movie. But when Mulder actually kisses Scully in “Millennium,” he’s very careful and respectful about it – he looks at her, he waits for her to turn her head, he checks with her to make sure this is something she actually wants. In the dream world, we get the kind of scene that movies have conditioned us to think is sexy – and it is! – but in the real world, with real feelings at stake, Mulder acts in a way that’s much more consistent with friendship and respect and basic decency.
