I Don’t Have to Wait For It Anymore: A Goodbye to How I Met Your Mother

A friend of mine in college once said that we make a home with the people nearest to us. That’s why we tend to become friends with people who live in our halls or take classes with us or work in our office. It’s not always a matter of being meant for each other, as specific individuals, although sometimes that can happen—it’s just that we as people are meant to connect with other people. It’s what we do.

How I Met Your Mother is like that, in show form.

Spot the baby actor!

If you’re just checking in, here’s an update: British television has largely consumed my summer. And if you’re just checking in on British television, here’s an update on that: Britain has about ten actors. They’re all wildly talented, and they all take turns appearing in each others’ shows and blockbuster films and it’s FINE. It’s fun, actually—it’s like a game. Spot the actor. A friend who’s marathoning her way through Doctor Who texted me in a frenzy when she realized that Cassandra was Madam Hooch in Harry Potter (her exact words: “OMGGG I’M BEATING OUT A SAMBA RIGHT NOW”). These are the exciting moments brought to you by the BBC.

In honor of England’s bigger-on-the-inside entertainment industry, I figure it’s time to talk about our favorite “spot the actor” moments. You know what I’m talking about: those “I had no idea who you were the first time I saw this, but now I know and love you and look at you you’re such a baby!” moments. We’ve all been there. Let’s discuss.

Beware the Ides of Feelings: My Top TV Deaths

“Beware the Ides of March” was the Roman version of a spoilery TV promo. Caesar knew to tune in at 9/8c with his tissues in hand, but he didn’t know why he’d need them, so he just walked around sad and scared all the time.

In his memory, here’s a list of my favorite TV deaths. To clarify, I’m talking actual, never-coming-back deaths, as opposed to the “technically dead for a while” thing, which 83% of TV characters have been at one time or another. I also limited myself to one death per show, to keep this from being The J.J. Abrams Compendium of Sadness.

Obviously, in the spirit of this Roman holiday, the whole list is a spoiler. (more…)

Romance According to Television

Personally, I’m still of the mindset that a lollipop taped to a construction paper heart should be an acceptable Valentine at any age. It’s personalized and there’s candy involved; WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT FROM US, WORLD? But for an outside-the-box wooing experience, look no further than your favorite shows. If TV is to be believed (and if it isn’t, I’ve made a hug mistake), these are the most foolproof ways to romance that special someone in your life: (more…)

“It’s sports. It’s supposed to be loud!”–Or, Real Football Teams and the Fictional People Who Love Them

And just like that, football season is over. No more Destiny’s Child reunions, no more confetti angels, no more power at the Superdome. (Beyonce borrowed it to RUN THE WORLD but gave it back because her hips are already doing that.) To help ease your transition into this dark world of increased emotional stability, I’ve put together a list of my favorite NFL fans on television—because on television, football season never ends! Next time you find yourself longing to swoon at conquering men or throw a pillow at a replacement ref, just return to these guys. They’ll never steer you wrong.  (more…)

You Beautiful Tropical Fish: The Finest Lady Friendships on Television

TV these days! Guy love gets ALL THE LOVE, and then the guys get to come between the ladies and turn them against each other. Not on my watch, dudes. There are still some ladies out there who celebrate each other, don’t take themselves too seriously, and are genuinely happy for their friends’ success. Amy Poehler teaches me that every time she laughs in an award’s face. (more…)
